About the founder Tyler

Thought to Thread is more than yarn. It’s a company that wants to unite crafters over a common thread.
Founder Tyler Smith has been creating art with fiber since childhood. His grandmother Gale, taught him how to sew and crochet when he was 10; knitting didn’t quite click at the time. But he found himself returning to it during the Covid-19 pandemic, teaching himself through YouTube tutorials and launching an Instagram account to document his projects. The handle he chose, thoughttothread, was originally a nod to his love of reading and the fiber arts.
In the summer of 2021, Tyler began dyeing yarn in his 460-square foot condo in the heart of Seattle. Working with a couple of catering pans on his kitchen stove, he could only process about four skeins at a time. Initially, he wanted to try and replicate commercial yarns that he found cost prohibitive. What he discovered instead was a creative playground. Not every early colorway was a success, but Tyler relished in the artistic freedom that came with the process.

He had long thought of art as something two-dimensional, like painting or drawing. Dyeing yarn, on the other hand, forced him to think in three dimensions: how would a colorway, perhaps variegated or speckled, turn out once it had been knitted, crocheted, or woven into fabric? Tyler loved being able to think in multiple dimensions; he was hooked.

Today, Thought to Thread can be found at local pop-ups, yarn stores, and fiber festivals. Acorn Street Shop, located in Seattle, is the home store for Tyler’s creations! If you’ve created something beautiful with our yarn, we’d love to see it. Tag us on Instagram or say hello in person. Nothing brings us more joy than watching a shared passion for the fiber arts bringing people together.
